Edge Mountaineers Win 2019 Mandi Schwartz Memorial Tournament

 

Wilcox, SK – December 8, 2019 – The Edge Mountaineers from Calgary, Alberta have claimed the title of the prestigious 2019 Mandi Schwartz Memorial Tournament. The Mountaineers won a hard-fought battle against the Regina Rebels, winning the championship by a score of 3-2 in Overtime.

 

This prestigious female hockey tournament, hosted by the Notre Dame Hounds, saw 16 of the best Female Midget AAA teams from Western Canada face-off. A total of 40 games were played over the past 4 days, culminating with the championship game at the Duncan McNeill Arena in Wilcox on Sunday, December 8, 2019.

 

The Mountaineers saw two goals including the overtime winner from Aliya Jomha and the game-tying goal Sarah Wozniewicz, while goaltender Jessica Flegel backstopped the Mountaineers by making 25 saves for the win. Regina’s Neena Brick was the lone scorer for the Rebels finding the net twice, while goalie, Chantel Weller, was unbelievable in net making 34 saves for the Rebels.

 

The Mandi Schwartz Tournament is one of the most highly scouted female tournaments in Western Canada, seeing close to 40 NCAA, USport and ACAC coaches attending in 2019.

 

“Since having this tournament named after Mandi Schwartz 8 years ago, the tournament has become a big honour for players & teams to participate in, and the level of competition is stronger than any tournament held in Western Canada,” said Craig Perrett, Female Hockey Coordinator at Notre Dame.

 

Mandi Schwartz attended and played her high school hockey at Notre Dame with the Hounds and graduated in 2006. Mandi then went on to play in the NCAA for the Yale Bulldogs at Yale University. In December of 2008, Mandi was diagnosed with cancer (acute myeloid leukemia). Mandi received treatment and returned to Yale for the spring semester; however, in April of 2010 Mandi learned that the cancer had returned. Mandi then received a stem cell transplant in September 2010, but later in December learned that the cancer had returned. Mandi passed away on April 3, 2011 at the age of 23.
